"Magic Carpets...the majestic way to travel"
I chose to do my project on magic carpets – one of the most prevalent (out of many) ways to travel in fantasies. Here, there are three girls “flying” their way towards a far-away, mystical castle for an evening of festivities.

Question 5 – Personal Perspective – Quality
What do you think of the quality of the design and composition? Do you believe the composition was well thought out, reasons? Were the elements of space, line and shape effectively used (yes and no not acceptable answers)?
I thought the overall quality of the design and composition was good and well thoughout.
I especially liked the use of a girl on a magic carpet flying to the castle as an excellent example of using shape and an imaginary line to the destination of the castle.
The placement of text in the negative space at the bottom and right of the image was also a good idea. However, I would have made the text with a slightly larger font size and a drop-shadow and would have tried a pale yellow for the color of the text for more contrast.
The two smaller images of people flying on a magic carpet with black straight lines to indicate motion did not work for me and seemed to distract from the overall composition.
At first I thought they were small rocket ships.
Suggest a second smaller image or shape of a person flying slightly ahead of the first larger image would have worked better and I would have shifted the castle to the upper right corner.
The castle looks like it is enclosed in a bubble to highlight it.
I would have softened the left edge of the bubble or circle.
It has a too sharp of an edge for the cirlce shape used to highlight the castle.
Why is flying on a magic carpet majestic?
Magic carpets–for the flying challenged.
The composition does have a story book fantasy look and feel.
Good first project.

Question 3 – Shape- Vivi
How is shape used in the composition? 2-d, 3-d, grouping of shapes, etc. How were elements of shape used to optimum effect in composition? If shape was not effective give reasons.
I believe that shape is used very effectively in this piece. I believe the mix of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes allows for the piece to pop out. The girls that are flying on the magic carpets give a sense of movement in an otherwise still piece. The girls are placed in such a way that they give off a circular shape around the center castle, the girl’s ring seems to be finished by the ring of the moon. This circle allows for the viewers attention to be directed at the castle as the main focus of the piece. Great Job!
How effectively was the concept of “transportation” explored? Do you think that this student successfully communicated transportation as the main idea of the composition; if not what do you think the main concept is?
Transportation was used in a unique way in the image. She really was creative using people on carpets as her theme of transportation. I believe she successful communicated transportation as the main idea because the image is viewed in a flying type of way that you can’t help but understand that image has everything to do with transportation. Also, it was creative on the fact that the closer the view is from anyone of the people on the carpet the more recognizable the fog is representing transportation by flying. In my on personal opinion she nailed it. Great job!

Question 1 – Space
How is space used in the composition? (filling the space:concept of Positive/Negative explored. Techniques which may create the illusion of space(which techniques)? How were elements of space used to optimum effect in composition? If space was not effective give reasons.
I think that this piece is very intresting the space used in the compostion gives a very calming effect. To me the castle seems to be the the positive space in this project. It seems to be encapsulated by an ora or some kind of shining shield. The lightness that surrounds it makes it stand out and gives it a magical look. The color of the clouds and flying carpets really add to the appeal of the focus. The ocean water seems to be sparkling and the angles at which each of the flying carpets are one close up and the other farther away really adds depth to this piece. I think the student used space very effectively to potray her point . I really like this project, and think this was one of my favorite pieces.

Question 2 – Line
How is line used in the composition? Contour, types of line, emotion or texture effectively used (describe where and how within the composition).
How were elements of line used to optimum effect in composition? If line was not effective give reasons.
I love the composition as a whole. I believe lines were used very effectively throught the entire composition. The subtle lines that seperate the sky and the water are great, as well as the arc over the castle that create the illusion of maybe a water globe. I also like the way opposite types of lines, (straight lines as well as wavy lines) were used on the magic carpets, but gave both the illusion of movement.
